Human-Elephant Coexistence: Lecture Series, LRS Expansion and Solar Lights in Ehetuwewa
In December 2023, the Chair of the Human-Elephant Coexistence (HEC) subcommittee, Mr. Supun Lahiru Prakash, conducted a series of public lectures focusing on ‘The Present Status of Elephant Conservation and Human-Elephant Conflict Mitigation in Sri Lanka.' These enlightening sessions coincided with a poignant photo exhibition organized by 'The Breath' Environment organization, shedding light on the tragic death toll of elephants due to conflict with humans.
These lectures were held at The Mahaweli Center and the Ministry of Education in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and provided vital platforms for raising awareness and fostering dialogue on this pressing issue.
LRS Expansion in Ehetuwewa
In addition to their educational endeavors, the HEC subcommittee embarked on field visits to monitor the current status of Light Repellent Systems (LRS) in key regions. Venturing into Hambantota, Bibile, and Mahiyanganaya, they engaged with local communities, sharing insights and experiences while gathering valuable feedback.
The installation of a new LRS on December 29, 2023, in Ehetuwewa, Anuradhapura, stands as a testament to their ongoing efforts to mitigate human-elephant conflicts and safeguard the well-being of both species.
Installation of Solar Lights in Ehetuwewa
Ehatuwewa village, nestled in Anuradhapura District, faces safety concerns due to the absence of streetlights, particularly in its upper region along the 288 route, which frequented by wild elephants. Responding to urgent calls for action by our DR, the HEC Subcommittee installed seven solar-powered streetlights in Ehetuwewa. These sustainable solutions not only enhance visibility but also contribute to reducing the village's carbon footprint. By harnessing solar energy, we ensure reliable and cost-effective lighting for Ehatuwewa, empowering its residents with safer pathways.
