Sri Lanka’s rapidly disappearing forest cover stands at approximately 18%. With increasing urbanization, shifting agriculture, illegal cultivation, encroachment, unsustainable as well as unplanned development, many of the country’s sanctuaries, natural environments, and the wildlife within need to be protected and conserved. Sri Lanka was named #1 travel destination by lonely planet in 2019 and with many of the country’s attractions based on its natural beauty, and biodiversity, increasing pressures of tourism also present new challenges to conservation.
