Human Elephant Conflict Project - Light Repel System |
Recording an average of over 300 elephant deaths and 90 human deaths a year, Sri Lanka has the highest incidents of human-elephant conflict (HEC) in the world and the HEC is threatening the very future of the Sri Lankan elephant. The Light Repel System (LRS) was developed as a low cost, effective tool in mitigating HEC, which relies on community engagement and empowerment for its success. The LRS deters elephants encroaching into agricultural land and private property through a system of ‘blinking lights’, which has been scientifically proven to ‘repel’ elephants by leveraging off a biological limitation of the elephant. In more scientific terms "in the absence of a fovea in the elephant eyes (clear vision of the eye) and the dominance of rods (provide twilight vision) throughout the retina for good night vision, when a flickering LED light hits an elephant’s retina, it is temporarily blinded and disoriented and moves away or avoids the light." It is currently being tested in 25 locations in Sri Lanka in districts with high HEC. The WNPS is working with several sponsors to test the LRS to gather more data before we collaborate with the Department of Wildlife Conservation to roll this out at a national level. No single HEC mitigation method will work independently to deter elephants entering and raiding crops. They are far too intelligent. A combination of methods: starting with fencing of village and crops as introduced by eminent Elephant Researcher, Dr. Prithiviraj Fernando is a vital strategy that must be used as it gives both the human and elephant mutual benefits, and protection. Along with that, using other mitigation methods like the LRS, sounds, smell and other deterrents are important to reinforce this strategy. |
