Sub-Committees

Sub Committees

The general committee of the WNPS have developed the following sub-committees which each members offer their time and energy to achieve its goals. These sub-committees do change depending on the requirement and needs of the wildlife conservation in Sri Lanka.

  • HUMAN ELEPHANT CO EXISTENCE - This committee mainly looks at the issues faced by elephants due to conflicts with humans and their activities. They are working with the DWLC and advising them to on various issues pertaining to this growing conservation issue in Sri Lanka. Click here to read the latest update on this sub-committee’s report.

  • CONSERVATION AND ENVIRONMENT - All other conservation issues outside of Elephants are taken up by this committee. The Pallenkandal church in Wilpattu National Park is one the main issues that is being handled by this commit at this time. The ROAR project is another re-forestation program that is ongoing and done by the society. Click here to read the latest update on this sub-committee’s report.

  • School Nature Clubs - the SNC project has been a long standing project done by the WNPS which is now in the process of getting a new lease of life. The POWER Project is being fine-tuned and donors are being approached for funding. Read full report here.

  • BUNGALOWS - The society has 3 holiday bungalows close to 3 of Sri Lanka’s best national parks. Wilpattu, Yala and Udawalawe. Very special rates are offered to the membership for overnight stays. This committee work towards ensuring the proper management and running of our societies bungalows.

  • FINANCE AND FUND RAISING - Being one of the most critical aspects of the society which runs purely on its donors and members contribution, this sub-committee and the whole general committee work together to ensure the that the necessary funding is obtained for the many projects and challenges that the society undertake.   • MEMBERS’ PARTICIPATION - Our society strives to offer our membership activities and opportunities to work towards the conservation of Sri Lanka’s biodiversity. Towards this end we arrange a series of programs throughout the year. One of the main events are the monthly lectures which take place on the 3rd Thursday of each month (see full details here). Also we have the annual member’s get-together which gives our membership a chance to get to know each other, have fruitful discussions and share ideas about the burning issues the countries wildlife is facing.

  • Head Office - The societies Head office and its admin work and staff are looked in to by this committee and suggestions for improvement of its efficiency are given.

  • PRESS AND PUBLICITY - One of the most critical parts of the society’s work is its visibility in the press of the work that it is doing on conservation. The society works closely both the print and live media to create awareness about conservation issues the country is facing. It also creates with regards to the work that the society is doing on both education and awareness of conservation in Sri Lanka.

  • IT AND WEBSITE - This sub-committee works towards ensuring that the society’s web site is up to date and has relevant information on it for its members and for the general public.
