THE RESIGNATION OF DR. SUMITH PILAPITIYA AS THE DIRECTOR GENERAL OF WILDLIFE CONSERVATION

7th May 2016

The Resignation of Dr. Sumith Pilapitiya as the Director General of Wildlife Conservation

We are deeply saddened by the news that Dr. Sumith Pilapitiya has submitted his resignation from the post of Director General of Wildlife Conservation. We are made to understand that political pressure may have been exerted on him and/or he has been forced into reversing decisions taken according to law, which have naturally affected the carrying out of his duties in a lawful, moral and ethical manner.

We recognize him as a professional with integrity and the right experience and knowledge to serve in this position. As concerned organizations, we welcomed the appointment of Dr. Pilapitiya to this post and looked forward to an era where the Department of Wildlife Conservation would operate in a professional manner under Dr. Pilapitiya without any fear or favour, allowing all officials to carry out their duties and serve the Nation.Furthermore, as an internationally recognized professional, such a resignation will no doubt have a negative impact on the tourism industry and reputation of the Country.

We recognize that the majority of our Government officials serve in their positions with integrity and work tirelessly in the face of political interference and influence for the betterment of the Country. We stand together to ask our political representatives to allow government officials to carry out their duties according to the law, without political influence and interference.

We respectfully ask that our elected officials stay true to their election promise of good governance and uphold the rule of law.
