SOMAWATHIE NATIONAL PARK - BANANA CULTIVATION

Five Thousand acres from the somawathie National Park in the Mahaweli Flood plains had been cleared by Dole Lanka, the Sri Lanka branch of the infamous US based Dole Food Company. The Project, which is carried out within a National Park, breaches all established norms and laws regarding a protected area. The project was of great concern to the Society, as it would destroy the eco-system and block the elephant corridors. The project bordering the Mahaweli river is the home ground to around 400 villu elephants.

The Society together with other concerned organizations, is the home ground to around 400 villu elephants.

The Society together with other concerned organizations, armed with satellite images obtained from the World Wildlife Fund. made our protest and took up the issue with the owners of Dole Lanka Pvt Ltd, the Director General of Wildlife Conservation and the American Embassy in Sri Lanka, as well.

A major victory was won by the Society and all other conservationists, when the banana farm on the national park land was dismantled and Dole Lanka Pvt Ltd terminated the project.
