SOCIETY ON CONSERVATION ISSUES

The Society has had regular meetings with the director general, Department of wild life conservation (DG DWLC) conservator general of forest, chairman central environmental authority, to discuss advise and rectify many conservation issues effecting nature, Wildlife and the environment.

WILPATTU NATIONAL PARK

The Society together with two other NGO's has taken up before the Supreme Court, the illegal roadway constructed through the national park. The Society opposed the opening of the roadway for public use. Despite many hearings the case continues before a bench of three judges. The next date of hearing is the 13th January 2012

DAHAIYAGALA ELEPHANT CORRIDOR

With the change of seasons, 200-300 elephants living in the Dahaiyagala, Duvili Ella and Bogahapitiya, forest make their way through the elephant corridor into the Udawalawe National Park in search of water, provided by the udawalawe reservoir.

SINHARAJA FOREST RESERVE

sinharaja forest reserve, the renowned world heritage site was in danger with the proposed roadway through the forest to link suriyakanda. The expert panel specially appointed to report on thos matter recommends the use of the existing foot path as had been traditionally used in the past, instead of the proposed roadway. The society has taken the matter up, at the highest level. There has also has been an international outcry.

Five Thousand acres from the somawathie National Park in the Mahaweli Flood plains had been cleared by Dole Lanka, the Sri Lanka branch of the infamous US based Dole Food Company. The Project, which is carried out within a National Park, breaches all established norms and laws regarding a protected area. The project was of great concern to the Society, as it would destroy the eco-system and block the elephant corridors. The project bordering the Mahaweli river is the home ground to around 400 villu elephants.

HOLDING GROUND FOR ELEPHANTS

To minimize the escalating human elephant conflict, the  Government has proposed to establish enclosed holding grounds in the North Central and North Western Provinces, for elephants.

WNPS BUNGALOWS

The Wild Life & Nature Protection Society operates three holiday bungalows at Yala , Wilpattu and Udawalawe for the benefi t of our members and their Guest. Each bungalow has a Bungalow Keeper and an Assistant who will prepare your meals the way you like and attend to your requirements. The bungalow staff will always oblige to make picnic breakfasts and lunches for excursions on request.

YALA BUNGALOW

This bungalow is situated at Yala Palutupana adjacent to the Lagoon and Sea. Visitors have to travel through the Palatupana saltern to reach the bungalow. The bungalow which could accommodate 10 adults has a bed room with attached bathroom and a large hall, dining area, outdoor shower and toilets . The Kitchen and Staff rooms have been recently renovated to provide a better service to our members.

This bungalow is situated in Wilpattu - Hunuwilagama in close proximity to the Park overlooking a lake. The bungalow has two bed rooms with attached toilets, a large hall, dinning area and other facilities. It can accommodate 10 adults.

UDA WALAWE BUNGALOW

This bungalow is situated on a hillock adjoining the causeway and over looking the National Park and the Walawa Tank. The bungalow has two bed rooms with attached toilets, open hall, dinning area and other facilities and could accommodate 6-8 adults. The Park entrance is only 10 minutes from the bungalow.
